About

Welcome! This is a web journal to chronicle the adventures of the Ulrich family as they homeschool around the USA on a bus. We are Miles (Dad & school principal), Kathy (Mom & teacher), Caleb (15 16), Sarah (14), Kevin (10 11), and Adam (6 7). We’ve always homeschooled the kids and we wanted to take it to the next extreme – for our benefit as well as theirs. Homeschooling should be fun and educational while developing the character of the child. It should also allow the child to learn at their pace and according to their learning style. Travel should be the same – fun, educational, and at your own pace. Both are a lifestyle and an adventure. By combining the two, we are developing deeper relationships as we learn about our country, the people around us, and each other. This web log (blog) was created to share our adventure.

Although many people assume Miles is retired, he is not. He’s worked as a software developer and manager for 25 years, most recently at Microsoft. Now he does IT consulting with a focus on non-profit ministries. He is able to do this over the Internet using fairly recent innovations in satellite and wireless technologies. His company is LightShine Software but he’s been too busy to put up his business site so don’t go there.

Since Miles is the primary author, most of this blog is about family, homeschooling, bus stuff, and computers. I will try to organize the content by subject so you can skip over what does not interest you. The kids are keeping their own journals so we’ll get some of that in here as well.

  2. Kathy & Miles -

Looked at your forestland yesterday. I would characterize the overall damage as “light” with the worst of it coincidentally being where everyone can see it… near the mailboxes. Some scattered breakage and blowdown in the interior, but from my walk through it looked like fewer than 100 trees overall were impacted.

Glad you are having a great trip!

    John

  3. Good to see the updates coming again! Was beginning to think the computers onboard had crashed. Hoping all aboard are well, and that you find lots of things to do ‘down south’ while waiting for winter to break in the Northeast! You are missing one heck of a good ski season.
    Best to all.

  4. Hi all!
I just had to leave some kind of comment on your blog. :) I like the map, it’s neet to be able to “follow” you around. Hope all is going according to plan. :)

    Laura

  5. Sarah, I love it when you post – you are a VERY talented writer. Spring has come to the Pacific Northwest; everything is in bloom here, and we are getting some lovely days.
Looking forward to reading more posts, especially about Washington DC.
OH – I LOVE that you are uploading video to YouTube – the one on the dunes was fun to watch! Caleb, you sure got a good head of steam running back up the dune – then you sort of came to a halt. I would not have done half as well trying to do that.
    Hugs to you all; Sharon

  6. Hi Miles and family, I’m Ray, my son Joe worked on the computers at the Buras EC site.

I see you are getting closer to my neck of the woods, SE PA. When you get close let me know and I hope we can get together. Some of the places you might want to visit here would be the Amish area of Lancaster, some of the early industrial museums (Hopewell Village, an early iron furnace for one), and what’s left of the local canals.

Send me an email and I’ll respond with my phone@ etc.

    Ray

  7. Hi Miles and family,
Hello from Omaha from a former Flagstaff classmate. It sounds like a wonderful adventure your family is on. Hope you’re having a wonderful time. Thanks for sharing your trip.
    Take care,
    Barbara

  8. Hello everyone!
Just got back from a visit to Buras and thought of you all. The Y is a ghostly place now, very sad to see it all emptied out. Some changes have been made in Plaquemines, but progress is still slow-going.
I’m living in Philadelphia now, teaching preschool and enjoying life very much… possibly going to get my fill of volunteering for a month at Black Mesa in Arizona– a really interesting place… look it up on google to read more…
Oh, my friend Meghan is starting a gleaning project through an anti-hunger organization her in Philly
and I told her about Kathy’s wealth of knowledge.
She would love any resources, documents, discussion that you could offer. Her email address is:
    twostorylimetree@hotmail.com
That’s all for now– Keep in touch!
    Adam
